Welcome to Sumner Washington. Nestled in the valley where the White River flows into the Puyallup River, the City of Sumner is combining the best of the past with a visionary future. Settled in 1853 by pioneers, the City was built on agriculture, especially daffodils, rhubarb, hops, berries, vegetables and turf grasses. In fact, Sumner is still known as the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World!Sumner has retained its small town charm even though it is now a city of 9000 residents. The historic Downtown Sumner is home to a variety of shops and businesses and hosts many community events including the Daffodil Parade, Wine Walks and Music Off Main. The East Main Street business district is a newer, vibrant business community with restaurants, shopping and services. And, the industrial north of Sumner is home to many warehouses and industries that enjoy easy freeway access and other amenities suited to manufacturing. With two major highways intersecting in Sumner and a commuter station for the Sounder train, it’s easy to get to Sumner. With stellar schools, beautiful parks and small town charm, it’s hard to leave.Sumner was prominently featured on MTV's documentary show True Life. The episode featured troubled teen parents, titled "Baby Momma Drama".After Orting, Washington, Sumner along with Puyallup, Washington, are geographically next in line to be hit by lahars whenever Mount Rainier erupts in the future.

Local History

Sumner was settled in 1853 by members of a wagon train which crossed over the Cascade Mountains through Naches Pass. In 1883, the town was platted on the 160 acres owned by John Kincaid. The establishment of the Northern Pacific rail line through the Sumner area and the construction of the depot influenced the development of the community.
Sumner was incorporated at a special election held on January 27, 1891 and George H. Ryan was the first Mayor of Sumner. Some believe the origin of the town's name remains a mystery. Sumner may have been named after Thomas Sumner, the father-in-law of Ezra Meeker, a famous pioneer and Puyallup's first mayor; or after U.S. Sen. Charles Sumner, a famous anti-slavery politician from Massachusetts during the Civil War era; or even after a woman who served as a deputy in the local post office. Her first name does not appear in local records. It could have something to do with Eliza Jane Sumner, also.

The Sumner Summer Arts Festival is being held August 4th and 6th in downtown Sumner, Washington. The festival brings to Main Street artists, food, entertainment, and fun. At the Festival all artists must produce all of their own artwork. There is no mass produced items allowed. This means the artwork at the festival is quality, handcrafted items that are unique in design.
